Tuscany Cycling Weather
Italian Bicycle Tours
Tuscany is a region of varied geography, from high mountains to Mediterranean
beachs and rolling hills so weather is complex and variable depending
on the influence these elements are playing on the specific region you
plan to visit while bicycling Tuscany.
Generally speaking though cycling weather in this part of Italy can
be described as one of long and hot summers through July and August,
with short mild winters mediated by the effects of the Mediterranean
Ocean.
Florence is an historic, in-land city caught between two ranges of
rolling
hills, blocking it from the cooler evening breezes coming off the Mediterranean.
June and July are the driest months and although weather charts may
suggest an average of only 75°F in the summer, Florence certainly
can have a number of very hot and humid days in the high 80's. Thus
bicycling in Tuscany is best planned for the shoulder seasons of May
and June, or September to October. You can then beat the heat and the
hords of tourist.
Coastal communities have the benifit of attracting Mediterranean breezes
and thus naturally a few degrees cooler than Florence. They also have
the added benifits of coastal roads that permit a short layover for
a dip in the ocean if the heat really does become overwhelming.
The town of Pisa, made famous by its leaning tower of Pisa", and
the coastal town of Livorno, one of Italy's largest port towns on the
Ligurian Sea, are two such towns that benifit from these slightly cooler
temperatures. Rain is almost unheard of in July and averages about 80mm
per month in the first half of the year, peaking to over 120 in the
wetter months of October and November
Elba, an old mining town, and the archipelago islands off the Tuscan
coast experience temperatures that are moderated by sea breezes averaging
25°C in July and August with vertually no rain.
The shoulder seasons of fall and spring are somewhat unpredictable
so it is important to take the appropriate rain gear for bicycling.
Tuscany can experience sudden rain storms, that could really put a damper
on your cycling tours if all your gear gets wet.
In winter it rarely dips below freezing in any of Tuscany,
even in the peak of the winter, although an occasional snowfall is not
unheard of, maybe more so in the northern extreme of the province where
the elevation climbs towards the Apuan Mountains. During the winter you
can expect 7/8 days of precipitation every month.
